THE FUTURE OF THE HUMANITIES AND ARTS IN HIGHER EDUCATION

Karl Heinz Bohrer, a German philosopher and literary critic who will lecture in our series on Monday, November 9, 1998, claims that a basic incompatibility exists between aesthetic experience and academic teaching. While, according to Bohrer, it is obvious that the academic institution has always been dedicated to the propagation of national or (transnational) ethical values, aesthetic experience, for him, is a frame of mind with an emphasis on its own present-ness, an emphasis so strong that aesthetic experience is incapable of making the very connection between present experience and future action on which any teaching of values has to rely.
